Milestone Lecture 2018
From firefighting to a systems approach for health and care improvement
Through stories of firefighting, beer, inhalation devices and micromorts, Professor John Clarkson explores the engineer’s world of systems design and risk in healthcare in this year's fascinating Milestone Lecture. John discusses tackling problems, complex integrated systems and new frameworks that help deliver the best possible care to patients. Over the past two decades there have been numerous references to the value of a systems approach in calls to transform health and care, without there being a common understanding of what this might mean.

Help us improve Front Court
We have created a short online survey to gather your opinions on Front Court and would be very grateful if you could take a few minutes of your time to help us review the magazine. The survey is five questions long and takes just a few minutes to complete.

Semi-subterranean Lodge
During the summer, Trinity Hall’s archivist came across a set of architects’ plans from 1970 for a new Master’s Lodge. The plans comprised a semi-subterranean construction with a grass roof, set in the Fellows’ Garden. This radical design would have completely changed the College’s physical environment. So, what’s the story behind these plans?

THEN for entrepreneurs
In September, we launched the Trinity Hall Entrepreneurs Network (THEN). As well as developing an online community, including a LinkedIn group, we will be hosting events in College and offering funding to students and young alumni in the sector. Applications for the Lee-Yung Family Fund for Entrepreneurship close on Monday 10 December.

Dear alumni...
In his first address as Vice-Chancellor of the University last year, Professor Stephen Toope said that he wanted the University to be "an unstoppable, unapologetic force for knowledge and understanding, for a more inclusive community, and for the betterment of our shared world." This year, in a special video message to alumni, he highlights the challenges of financial sustainability and initiatives around widening participation, diversity and student support. This is also at the front of our minds as we consider a fundraising campaign for student support.

Black Cantabs exhibition
Virtuoso violinist George Bridgetower (pictured) studied music at Trinity Hall in the early 1800s. His image hangs in the Bridgetower Room in College and is part of the Black Cantabs: History Makers exhibition at the UL, which tells the stories of black students at Cambridge. The collection of photographic portraits celebrates centuries of black students at Cambridge (from 1700 to the present day) and aims to inspire future generations. The exhibition is free to visit and open until Saturday 22 December, before it tours the University and Colleges.
