Helene Fesenmaier was born in New Ulm Minnesota, where her father, a surgeon, and mother, who had studied at the Art Institute in Chicago, both encouraged her commitment to art.
After graduation from Smith College and the School of Art and Architecture at Yale University, Helene travelled extensively in Latin America and Europe before becoming a founding member and later trustee of the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, which had endorsements from New York’s foremost artists, such as De Kooning, Rothko and Calder.
Helene has lived and worked in London since 1970. She has exhibited widely with an unrelenting studio practice in all mediums.
